DownTown Miami
Downtown Miami
Downtown is located around the Financial District of Miami, Florida, United States. In addition to the Financial District, the area also includes the neighborhoods of Brickell, the Historic District, Government Center, Arts & Entertainment District and Park West. The area is bisected by the Miami River and is bordered by Midtown (Edgewater and Wynwood) to the north, Biscayne Bay to the east, Civic Center and Overtown to the west, and Coconut Grove to the south.
Brickell Avenue and Biscayne Boulevard are the main north-south streets, and Flagler Street is the main east-west street. The neighborhood is defined by the Miami Downtown Development Authority (DDA) as the 9.8 km² area east of Interstate 95 between the Rickenbacker Causeway to the south and the Julia Tuttle Causeway to the north.
Origin
Downtown is the historic heart of Miami and, along with Coconut Grove, is the oldest area of the city, with an early pioneer settlement dating back to the early 19th century. Urban development began in the 1890s with the construction of the Florida East Coast Railroad by Standard Oil industrialist Henry Flagler to Miami at the insistence of Julia Tuttle. Flagler, along with real estate developers such as William Brickell and George E. Merrick, helped attract developer interest to the city with the construction of hotels, resorts, housing, and the extension of the Flagler railroad line.
Currently, Flagler Street, which begins in Downtown, is an important east-west street in Miami dedicated to the tycoon; The Julia Tuttle Causeway, which crosses Biscayne Bay just north of Downtown in the Edgewater neighborhood, is named after Tuttle.
In recent years, it has grown and expanded physically to become the fastest growing area in Miami, with a rapid increase in population and the highest concentration of skyscrapers in the region. It is home to numerous museums, parks, educational centers, banks, corporate headquarters, courts, government offices, theaters, shops and many of the city’s oldest buildings.
All roads lead to the center
Downtown is served by Miami Metro through the Historic Overtown/Lyric Theatre, Government Center and Brickell stations, accessible from Broward and Palm Beach counties via the transfer station between Tri-Rail and Miami Metro . The Metro is connected to the Metromover, which is made up of twenty-two stations in Downtown Miami on its three circular lines: Downtown, Brickell and Omni. The Government Center station, located next to the Stephen P. Clark Government Center, is the main station for Downtown and allows transfers to all Metromover lines, Metro trains and bus lines.
